Like me, maybe you’re feeling relieved \u2014 even optimistic and inspired \u2014 after an Inauguration Day that went by pretty smoothly last week given the circumstances we face as a nation. While I definitely gave myself the space to soak up what this transition and new chapter means for our fragile democracy (there may have been a January 20th, 12:01 PM mimosa involved) as you can see from this biweekly recap the work of WESTAF has not skipped a beat and indeed, seems to be ramping up across the organization. There\u2019s much to be thankful for, but in particular we\u2019re excited about: our own Teniqua Broughton\u2019s ASU MLK Leadership Award \u2014 it was a wonderful virtual event and<\/span> here are the highlights<\/span><\/a>, including Teniqua\u2019s superb speech; the <\/span>Creative Economies and Economy Recovery<\/span><\/a> report; our latest <\/span>ELC21 call for applicants<\/span><\/a> (get your candidates in, folks \u2014 February 1 deadline!); our very fun and very silly long-awaited WESTAFAGANZA (virtual) holiday party this past week (thank you, celebration committee); the much anticipated upcoming ArtX featuring Emma Osore from <\/span>BlackSpace<\/span><\/a>; CaFE\u2019s artful and informative <\/span>end-of-year recap<\/span><\/a>, as well as the various complex and essential tweaks and updates to our technology products shared with you below. While the pandemic continues to pose challenges, there\u2019s no doubt that we\u2019re rising to meet them on all fronts. I have been feeling so proud of WESTAF these days, and I hope you do too!<\/span><\/p>\n

MARY ANNE CARTER D\u00c9MISSIONNE DE SON POSTE DE PR\u00c9SIDENTE DU NATIONAL ENDOWMENT FOR THE ARTS (CG)<\/b><\/h2>\n

Sent this news along to you last week when we first heard through an email from Chairman Carter, but <\/span>this news became official<\/span><\/a>. I sent along a personal thank-you email right away on behalf of WESTAF to both Mary Anne and Tom Simplot, former senior deputy chairman, who also resigned at the same time. We have Mary Anne\u2019s forwarding contact information and other formal entities (like the RAOs and the western SAAs) are considering sending a farewell message as well. Here\u2019s <\/span>the official message<\/span><\/a> on the Arts Endowment\u2019s website. As we\u2019ve previously opined, Mary Anne was the right appointee at the right time, and she served the agency well, particularly through a pandemic. She\u2019ll be missed. Ann Eilers, the agency\u2019s deputy chairman of management and budget, will temporarily lead the agency. This past Friday, <\/span>Ra Joy<\/span><\/a> announced on Twitter that he has joined the Arts Endowment as chief of staff.<\/span><\/p>\n

ARTS ET CULTURE DANS LA TRANSITION BIDEN \u2014 DEUX ARTICLES DU NEW YORK TIMES (CG)<\/b><\/h2>\n

Two relatively recent articles have come out that\u00a0 position an arts policy agenda for the incoming administration, recapping the history of the National Endowment for the Arts as well as the future of Federal arts funding. On January 13 \u2014 <\/span>The Arts Are in Crisis. Here\u2019s How Biden Can Help<\/span><\/a>, followed two days later on January 15 by <\/span>Trump Tried to End Federal Arts Funding. Instead, It Grew<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

ORIENTATION DU CONSEIL D'ADMINISTRATION DE LA NASAA, BRIEFING DE TRANSITION (CG)<\/b><\/h2>\n

I joined my first NASAA meeting in an official capacity as a new board director \u2014 a board orientation. It was valuable and informative. I also joined a NASAA membership briefing on the presidential transition. A highlight (for me) was for NASAA leadership to announce the debut of the <\/span>Creative Economies and Economic Recovery<\/span><\/a> report, with a big shout out to WESTAF to about 100 participants in the meeting. It\u2019s great to get the acknowledgement, but it was also great word-of-mouth for Creative Vitality Suite in front of a very receptive and very relevant audience. Bravo to all involved!<\/span><\/p>\n

I\u2019m excited for board trustee Susan Garbett, who\u2019s been part of the team that\u2019s getting<\/span> the next big Meow Wolf project in Last Vegas<\/span><\/a> up and running. <\/span>The Omega Mart<\/span><\/a> looks weird and wonderful, and I can\u2019t wait to experience this new artist collaboration\/installation\/spectacle\/attraction for myself!<\/span><\/p>\n

INITIATIVE DE G\u00c9N\u00c9RATION D'ART TERRESTRE (LAGI) \u2014 FLY RANCH (CG)<\/b><\/h2>\n

These past few weeks, I\u2019ve been deep into reviewing entries into this <\/span>LAGI competition<\/span><\/a> in my role as a juror. As a quick recap, <\/span>LAGI <\/span><\/a>\u00a0and the Burning Man project have partnered to launch a <\/span>multi-disciplinary design challenge<\/span><\/a> that will create the foundation infrastructure at <\/span>Fly Ranch<\/span><\/a> near the Black Rock Playa in northwestern Nevada. In 2021, selected design teams will be provided an honoraria grant for the purpose of building a functional prototype on site. It has been super fun and inspiring to serve as a juror on this project<\/span><\/p>\n

Last week, WESTAF and NASAA announced the release of <\/span>Arts and Economic Recovery research<\/span><\/a>, conducted in collaboration with Douglas Noonan of Indiana University, demonstrating how the arts strengthen the economy following periods of acute economic distress. In addition to utilizing Creative Vitality Suite\u2122 data and in-depth qualitative research, WESTAF\u2019s report, <\/span>\u00c9conomies cr\u00e9atives et relance \u00e9conomique : \u00e9tudes de cas sur la relance et la r\u00e9silience men\u00e9es par les arts<\/span><\/a>, features a collection of stories that demonstrate how communities small and large are harnessing their creative assets to grow economic opportunities and rebound from hard times. Profiles of diverse communities in Arizona, Arkansas, Georgia, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Nebraska, Tennessee, Vermont, Washington, and West Virginia showcase the creative economy in action. Developed primarily for policy audiences, Creative Economies and Economic Recovery highlights how the arts can be part of comprehensive economic development strategy in the wake of the COVID-19 crisis. It also provides timely tools for cultural leaders looking to participate in recovery initiatives and advocate for federal, state, and local investment in the arts. At this time of economic uncertainty, the findings of this report offer the field evidence that the arts are an agile and resilient sector with the capacity to ignite job growth, reduce economic risk through diversification, stimulate commerce, and attract tourism. From Save our Stages to PPP and Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA) for 1099 and mixed income earners to state programs to artist relief grants, <\/span>the webinar<\/span><\/a> is designed to inform California arts and culture constituents about opportunities to support the sector.<\/span><\/p>\n

On January 8th, the SRI department launched the WESTAF ELC 2021 program application. As of today, applicants have little over a week to complete their application found at <\/span>https:\/\/www.westaf.org\/emerging-leaders-of-color\/<\/span><\/a> as the application is due February 1, 2:00 p.m. Mountain time. With the upcoming deadline, we encourage board members to share the application information (linked above) with all their networks and recommend qualified applicants, when applicable. DEMANDE D'ARTISTE CNMI (MS)<\/b><\/h2>\n

D\u00e9but d\u00e9cembre, WESTAF a lanc\u00e9 le CNMI CARES Relief Fund for Artists. Cette subvention soutient les artistes dont les projets ont \u00e9t\u00e9 annul\u00e9s ou affect\u00e9s n\u00e9gativement par la pand\u00e9mie de coronavirus dans le Commonwealth des \u00eeles Mariannes du Nord. RENCONTRE AVEC LA FONDATION THOMA (MS)<\/b><\/h2>\n

In December 2020, Madalena was introduced by Gabrielle Uballez (ELC14\/NM) to Sarah Rovang and Christine Dong of the <\/span>Thoma Foundation<\/span><\/a>. The Thoma Foundation is a family foundation based in Santa Fe and Chicago, that serves the states of AZ, NM, OK, and IL. Historically, the Foundation has supported art collecting in diverse areas. More recently, the Thoma Foundation has shifted their priority to support equity and emerging arts leaders, specifically in rural areas, and technological innovation in the arts. Madalena had an introductory meeting with them in December, with a follow-up that included David last week. It was agreed that we will continue to discuss partnership opportunities over the course of the coming months as they pertain to our work in arts leadership, equity, and rural arts support in the states of AZ and NM. This could take the form of a regranting opportunity for WESTAF or another form of engagement with our networks in these states. We will be integrating Thoma Foundation into future discussions with our rural arts network.<\/span><\/p>\n

RENCONTRE AVEC DISART (LM)<\/b><\/h2>\n

Last week, Tamara Alvarado, Christian Gaines, David Holland, and Lani Morris met to discuss the future of accessibility work at WESTAF and within the region. As vice chair of the<\/span> DisArt<\/span><\/a> board, Christian connected WESTAF to the DisArt team. We are looking forward to further discussion and collaboration to build competency internally and within the region. Our team is motivated to build more intentional and authentic relationships with the disability community and work at the intersectionality of accessibility, inclusion, and racial equity.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

PR\u00c9SENTATION DE LA BOURSE DES LEADERS DES ARTS ET DE LA CULTURE DE COULEUR (ACLC) (DH)<\/b><\/h2>\n

Margie Johnson Reese, a member of the Emerging Leaders of Color faculty, invited David to lead an Americans for the Arts <\/span>Arts & Culture Leaders of Color Fellowship<\/span><\/a> session on January 15 to discuss professional communication and writing with a cohort of leaders from the Great Lakes Region. The session explored these topics through an equity lens, considering communication styles, components of personal communication, executive presence, writing skills for leaders, biases, and inequitable practices in communication based on white supremacy culture, plain language and plain English, and language liberation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

FINANCES ET ADMINISTRATION (AH)<\/b><\/h2>\n

WESTAF a d\u00e9pos\u00e9 une deuxi\u00e8me demande de programme de protection des salaires et nous attendons de nouvelles instructions de la part de l'USBank. Justine put together CaFE’s<\/span> end-of-year recap<\/span><\/a> highlighting stats in 2020. In spite of the pandemic and the challenges involved, the team kept busy by delivering excellent customer service with care and empathy. In December, Justine also interviewed our very own Lori Goldstein for the monthly webinar series titled, <\/span>Developing Virtual Public Art Experiences and Exhibitions<\/span><\/a>. This cross-program webinar introduced the Public Art Archive to CaFE customers. Lori featured PAA virtual exhibits and offered tips to organizations about ways to activate their own art collections as well as best practices for organizing virtual exhibitions, and general considerations when thinking about alternative exhibition formats.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

CVSUITE (KE)<\/b><\/h2>\n

L'\u00e9quipe s'est concentr\u00e9e sur la prochaine CVList et a tenu une r\u00e9union de lancement du projet. Nous sommes dans la phase de recherche de donn\u00e9es o\u00f9 Trevor traitera les listes de donn\u00e9es pour les trois meilleures id\u00e9es et reviendra vers l'\u00e9quipe pour un examen final. GO SMART (JG)<\/b><\/h2>\n

GO Smart travaille sur des e-mails de suivi qui seront envoy\u00e9s aux destinataires d'une campagne marketing il y a deux semaines. L'\u00e9quipe technique continue de travailler sur plusieurs tickets, corrigeant un probl\u00e8me de compatibilit\u00e9 avec Safari et mettant \u00e0 jour l'UX\/UI sur les boutons de modification et de suppression du portail d'administration. Nous avons envoy\u00e9 une enqu\u00eate sur les souhaits de communication des clients actuels et avons re\u00e7u un taux de r\u00e9ponse de 25%. Plusieurs ont demand\u00e9 des e-mails sur les bugs et les am\u00e9liorations, et certains ont demand\u00e9 \u00e0 \u00eatre inform\u00e9s des tendances du secteur et des sujets DEI. L'\u00e9quipe technique de PAA a r\u00e9alis\u00e9 avec succ\u00e8s cinq mises \u00e0 niveau du client CMS vers CollectionSpace 6.1, ce qui offrira aux clients une plus grande flexibilit\u00e9 pour la cr\u00e9ation de rapports et les mises \u00e0 jour de donn\u00e9es par lots. L'\u00e9quipe est en train de planifier les mises \u00e0 niveau restantes. De plus, Lori travaille avec l'\u00e9quipe de CollectionSpace sur une nouvelle extension pour le profil d'art public qui permettra aux clients d'utiliser la fonction \u00ab Liste de contr\u00f4le \u00bb pour la gestion du calendrier et du projet de composants particuliers de projets d'art public - une fonction qui n'est en grande partie pas disponible dans les syst\u00e8mes concurrents.<\/span><\/p>\n

ZAPP (CV)<\/b><\/h2>\n

Nous avons r\u00e9cemment sign\u00e9 trois nouveaux clients avec ZAPP, un signe optimiste et les premi\u00e8res nouvelles ventes de l'exercice. Notre \u00e9quipe a \u00e9galement \u00e9t\u00e9 occup\u00e9e avec le lancement d'une initiative visant \u00e0 aider nos clients \u00e0 passer au TEF pour leurs paiements mensuels. Nous avons envoy\u00e9 nos 75 premi\u00e8res invitations et avons d\u00e9j\u00e0 inscrit 50% de ces invit\u00e9s. Comme de nombreuses organisations sont encore incertaines de leurs plans pour 2021, notre \u00e9quipe a d\u00fb effectuer beaucoup plus de contr\u00f4les que d'habitude pour s'assurer que nous ne fournissons pas l'acc\u00e8s \u00e0 ZAPP aux clients qui n'ont pas pay\u00e9 ou sign\u00e9 un renouvellement de contrat.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
